USAFE

The United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) is the United States Air Force component of U.S. European Command. It is one of two Major Air Force Commands outside of the continental United States the other being the Pacific Air Forces. It is the only USAF Major Command to have its headquarters outside of the USA.

The USAFE has it’s headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. It is the oldest continuously active USAF major command constituted on the 19th January 1942 as the 8th Air Force by the United States Army Air Forces and activated on the 1st February 1942, at Langley Field, Virginia.  It has more than 39,000 active-duty, reserve and civilian employees assigned.

During the 'Cold War', the UK hosted several USAFE units based at RAF stations with a variety of aircraft. A-10s, F-111s and SR-71s were a regular sight in the skies over East Anglia. Today only two USAFE bases remain active with their own stationed units flying regular day-to-day sorties, these are RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall.
